Candy Cigarette

Photographer: Sally Mann

Candy Cigarette

The picture symbolizes my perception  of kids now a days. Today, children in our society try to grow up so fast that they forget that they are still kids and instead of rushing everything, should savor every second of it.

The kid in the stilts who is blurry in the background: To me he is blurry because kids in this generation do not know the true meaning of "playing outside." They would rather stay indoors and spend hours and hours of playing video games, glued to their phones or iPads, and even watch television. They do not know the true meaning of "go play outside with their friends."

The girl in the foreground with the cigarette: Kids now a  days would think that she is "cool" because she is smoking. In reality, she represents the lost of innocence of the childhood that this, my generation lacks. The cigarette represents all the electronics that is out there, how kids WANT it, and how they NEED it. In reality, however, it sucks away the inner child in them.

The girl on the right of the girl with a cigarette: This girl sums up where I would fall into place in our society. While I'm up to date with all the gadgets, and electronics that the twenty first century has to offer, I still reminisce about my childhood where I would play and sweat under the shimmering sun with my friends and just have a good time.

But like the boy in the stilts, that idea of playing outside is nothing more than a distant memory.

Humans of UTSA critique

Miguel Perez

The pictures that Miguel took were outstanding. The pictures reflect each individuals lifestyle and it also hints the kind of person they are. With Trey, he looks like he is an athletic guy who has a lot of potential not just in sports but also in education. He looks like he is confident that with the proper way of thinking about the out look of life he can accomplish anything. The picture of Alan makes him look like a person who works hard for the things he wants in life. He also looks like he is content with things that has been bestowed upon him. He looks happy and is very approachable, does not judge others just by their looks, and looks like he would actually try to get to know anyone. With Miguel's third picture Tom, he looks like he has been around. He looks like he is wise and knows the saying "I've seen it all" and actually is serious! The fourth picture Nancy, looks like she is a sweet girl who tries to grab any opportunity she could get to accomplish what she wants in life. The fifth picture Chris, he looks like he enjoys his job and he looks like he is willing to help anyone who needs his help.
The cons of the pictures taken by Miguel were the the way his level are distributed in the picture. It is clear on the first picture with Trey. The picture looks "too" green, I don't know if he intentionally did that or it was a mistake, but it also feels like it added to the "oompf" of the picture. Another "mistake" that I noticed were that the pictures did not follow the rule of thirds. The subject is in the center of the picture, I do not mind that it is like that, but I don't know if the teacher is specific about that. The last flaw that I've encountered was that almost all the pictures were shot indoor. The assignment said that we needed to take pictures outdoors. Once again, I did not mind the setting of the pictures. I thought the pictures were amazing, and are unique, but we needed to follow instructions. To me however, not everything has to be followed as long as it is a good shot and is worth the experience then some rules are just meant to be broken. Sometimes you just have to step out of line and do your own thing. Whatever makes you comfortable, and what makes you; you.

Humans of UTSA

What is the saddest moment in your life? "When my Grandpa died because of prostrate cancer, it was it was like losing a really close friend. I did not know how to take it."Me: "I'm really sorry to hear that. I never had a close friend or relative die so I don't know how it feels. Do you need a hug? "you don't have to" Nah you need it! haha anyways Thanks for being my first photo! :)
What is the saddest moment in your life? "I guess when my father moved out of the state so I don't get to see him everyday." Me: I know how you feel. I have the same issue with my parents. They both live in California. "So why are you here in San Antonio?" Long story lets just say that I was just supposed to stay here for a year, but some things came up. "Ahh ok. Do you prefer San Antonio over California?" Sometimes cuz everything and everyone I know is here. But California is a better place, diversity wise. oh! And weather, especially the weather!
What is the saddest moment in your life? "When my cat died...a group of dogs tore it to pieces and one of its eye was popping out..." Me: ...
What is the saddest moment in your life? "when I peed myself in fourth grade...in front of everyone" Me: HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA WTF?! "Haha you asshole don't laugh at me!" Me: Sorry! I did not expect that answer haha "Yeah, it is a different 'sad moment'"
Is there anything going on currently in your life that you are excited about? "Come December I graduate and I'm a dual major." Me: Well congratulations! ready to leave this hell hole? "Yeah man can't wait to start working." Me: You look lie you're into cars. "Yeah man they're my passion. I can actually say that I'm the only Asian guy who owns a muscle car." Me: What kind of muscle car? "A mustang." Me: Ha so you're not one of those Asian guys who prefer exotics over everything. "Ha nah, what about you? what do you drive?" Me: A civic. Typical Asian right?!
